- Hi there,
-
- I guess this question has been posed by many people already and my input will
- just add weight to the request. Could somebody please explain why it's so
- difficult for Shapeshifter to handle MIDI. I understand that Mac applications
- which hit the hardware are unlikely to work but what about those programs which
- use the MIDI Manager (MM)? I've tried some Mac programs which register fine
- with MM but send nothing to the Amiga serial port :-( This is really bizarre
- considering that Amiga users of Shapeshifter have been using the serial port
- for other stuff such as comms and printing.
-
- Therefore the only difference I can think of is that the comms programs use
- some sort of 'modified' serial driver, coded by Christian Bauer, which is
- Amiga aware and therefore redirects the data to the Amiga serial port. However
- the Apple MIDI driver used by the MM has not been recoded to become Amiga
- aware and therefore it sends the data on to the modem port (ie hardware
- banging) which Shapeshifter is unaware of. Am I right or is there something
- very important I've overlooked? If I'm right then all that is needed is a
- new MIDI driver which should be straightforward to code if you know the
- Midi Manager protocol anhd Mac programming ... and Shapeshifter talk :-).
-
- Granted that Midi Manager is becoming obsolete (probably due to its speed
- and lack of flexibility) but I'm guessing there a few MIDI utilities which
- would be worth trying on Shapeshifter. Full blown sequencing is unlikely
- because of speed limitations but things like General MIDI control panels
- or sound editors could be useful.
-
- Food for thought?
